Tracheostomy Care & Management Training

This session is a theoretical learning session, delivering underpinning knowledge in relation to the safe management of tracheostomy. The use of practical equipment offers delegates the opportunity to practise correct technique and procedure in a safe, risk-free environment.

Course content:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
  • Indication for tracheostomy
  • Organisational policy and procedure in relation to tracheostomy care.
  • Effective use of equipment : tube change, dressing change, tracheostomy cuffs, speaking valves
  • Complications & Risks
  • Supporting effective communication
  • Appropriate response to problems in relation to the tracheostomy care and what to do in an emergency, including resus procedure
  • Identification of when medical referral is required. Documentation
  • Practical Session- may include use of range of equipment: tracheostomy tubes, suction tubing/catheters, tracheostomy cuff, collars, HMEs, ambu bag & clinical model

This underpinning knowledge must be consolidated within the workplace for the candidate to become competent.
