Managing the Client with Epilepsy

and the Safe Administration of

Rectal Diazepam and Buccal Midazolam training

This module provides an understanding of a wide range of knowledge about epilepsy & the skills & understanding required in relation to its management.

A Clinical Model is used during this course for the practical element and to practise technique.

MODULE OBJECTIVES

  • To gain an understanding of what epilepsy is and the different types of epilepsy.
  • To understand the effects that epilepsy may have on behaviour.
  • To understand potential causes of epilepsy, trigger factors and incidence.
  • To be able to respond appropriately  to seizures
  • To recognise and appropriately manage status epilepticus.
  • To be able to appropriately and safely administer rectal diazepam and gain awareness of potential problems associated with use.
  • to be aware of the importance of respecting and protecting clients' privacy and dignity.
  • To be aware of potential alternative treatment - buccal midazolam.
  • To be aware of correct documentation and protocols/policy guidelines.
  • To understand the importance of accessing specialist advice and support.
  • To gain an understanding of the possible social impact of epilepsy.
This training can also include "an understanding of VNS" if required
