Creative Communication in Dementia Care

The aim if this workshop is to consider a range of ways that we can communicate with people in the later stages of dementia.

We will consider how people whose communication has changed because of their condition are trying to engage us through their behaviour and/or facial expressions and learn how to observe physiological changes that can help indicate how a person might be feeling and how we can improve communication.

The workshop will include:

  • The impact of changes in the brain and communication
  • Barriers to communication
  • 'Sensory acuity’ – becoming an effective observer
  • The power of music and how it can be used to engage with people with dementia
  • 1-to-1 time: sharing ideas
  • Skills practice in developing creative activities in communicating with people living with dementia

By the end of the workshop participants will have identified an activity to be carried out on a 1-to-1 basis with a resident and set an action plan to complete.

After completing the workshop activities candidates will be encouraged to share their reflections of what they have learnt, with a view to implementing future activities in the care environment.
