Stoma Care

This module is designed to equip the candidate with an understanding of stomas and how to manage the care of clients with colostomies and ileostomies

Course to include:

  • Types of stoma and the reasons/circumstances leading to an individual having a stoma
  • Correct care/procedure for stoma management: changing, emptying and disposal of stoma bags
  • The importance of infection prevention and control measures
  • The importance of good skin care
  • Offering and providing good nutritional advice and fluid intake
  • Possible risks and complications
  • Documentation and reporting in relation to promoting good Stoma Care

A clinical practical model and supporting equipment is used for illustrative purposes and to practise technique.



Duration: 2.5 – 3 hours (depending on group size for practical work)
