Male Catheterisation training

This module is designed to teach the candidate catheterisation techniques and equip them with the basic knowledge and confidence to be able to use this skill within the workplace.

MODULE OBJECTIVES

  • To understand the basic anatomy and physiology of the male genito-urinary tract.
  • To be able to recognise when it is appropriate to catheterise – patient assessment.
  • Recognise the contraindications for catheterisation, and associated risks.
  • Be familiar with the equipment needed to perform catheterisation.
  • Be confident in recognising & providing an appropriate environment to perform the procedure.
  • Be able to prepare a trolley in readiness for catheterisation procedures.
  • Be confident in performing male catheterisation.

MODULE NOTES

  • A clinical model is used for the practical element and to practise technique.
  • This underpinning knowledge must be consolidated within the workplace for the candidate to become competent.
  • The changing & maintenance of suprapubic catheters can be included on request.
